Citation Generator
APA, MLA, Chicago and Harvard references from your details.
About Citation Generator
Citation Generator formats references in APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago and Harvard from details you enter, for websites, books and journal articles. Author formatting differs between styles in ways that are easy to get wrong — MLA uses "et al" from three authors, APA uses an ampersand — and those are the details that lose marks.
How to use it
- Pick a style and source type.
- Fill in the author, title, year and the fields specific to that source.
- Copy the formatted reference into your bibliography.
Questions
Which style should I use?
Whatever your department requires. Broadly: APA for psychology and the social sciences, MLA for literature and humanities, Chicago for history, Harvard across much of the UK and Australia.
Can it look up a source from a URL or DOI?
No — that needs an API. You enter the details manually and it formats them.
Is the output guaranteed correct?
It follows the common pattern for each style. Edge cases — edited volumes, corporate authors, multiple editions, DOIs — vary, so check against your institution’s guide before submitting.
