Random Picker & Groups
Pick a name fairly, or split a class into groups.
About Random Picker & Groups
Random Picker & Groups chooses a name fairly or splits a list into balanced groups, using the browser’s cryptographic random source with a proper Fisher–Yates shuffle rather than the biased sort-with-random trick. Built for classrooms: the no-repeat option ensures everyone gets a turn before anyone gets a second.
How to use it
- Paste your names, one per line or comma separated.
- Click Pick one, or set a group count and click Make groups.
- Leave no-repeat on so the same person is not picked twice in a round.
Questions
Is it genuinely random?
Yes. It uses crypto.getRandomValues with Fisher–Yates, which gives every arrangement equal probability. Sorting by a random comparator, which many tools do, is measurably biased.
What does no-repeat do?
Tracks who has been picked and excludes them until everyone has had a turn, then resets. Fairer than pure random, which can pick the same person three times running.
Are the groups equal in size?
As equal as possible. With 10 people in 3 groups you get 4, 3 and 3.
Random Picker & Groups is free and runs entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no watermark, no limit on use.
