Compress Image
Shrink file size with a quality slider and a before/after count.
About Compress Image
Compress Image reduces the file size of a photo by re-encoding it as JPEG at a quality level you control, showing you the before and after sizes so you can judge the trade-off yourself. It is useful for getting a photo under an upload limit, speeding up a website, or emailing a batch of images. The compression runs on a canvas inside your browser, so the photo is never sent to a server and there is no watermark or daily cap.
How to use it
- Drop a photo onto the page, or click to choose one from your device.
- Drag the quality slider. Around 70% is usually indistinguishable from the original; below 60% you start to see blocking around edges and text.
- Click Compress, check the size saved, then download the result.
Questions
How much smaller will my image get?
Typically 50–80% smaller for photos straight off a phone camera, which are usually saved at near-maximum quality. Images that have already been optimised may not shrink at all — the tool tells you when that happens rather than handing you a larger file.
Will it ruin the quality?
JPEG compression is lossy, so some detail is always discarded. At 70–80% quality the difference is invisible at normal viewing size. The preview lets you check before downloading.
Does it work on PNG files?
You can load a PNG, but it is converted to JPEG, which loses transparency. For a PNG that must stay a PNG, use the Convert Format tool instead.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is read by your browser and processed on your device. Nothing is transmitted.
Compress Image is free and runs entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no watermark, no limit on use.
