Percentage
Percent of a number, share of a total, or percent change.
About Percentage
Percentage handles the three questions people actually ask: what is X% of Y, X is what percent of Y, and what is the percent change from X to Y. The third is the one most often got wrong — a rise from 50 to 75 is a 50% increase, but a fall from 75 back to 50 is a 33% decrease, not 50%.
How to use it
- Pick the mode that matches your question.
- Enter the two numbers.
- The answer appears immediately, with the calculation spelled out underneath.
Questions
Why is a 50% rise not cancelled by a 50% fall?
Because each is measured against a different starting point. 100 rising 50% is 150; 150 falling 50% is 75, not 100. Percentage changes do not simply add up.
How do I calculate a discount?
Use "X% of Y" to find the amount saved, or the dedicated Discount tool, which also shows the final price and handles tax.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
Going from 10% to 15% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but a 50% increase. Both are correct and they mean different things.
