Whitespace Cleaner fixes text pasted out of a PDF, Word or a web page: collapsing repeated spaces, trimming line ends, reducing runs of blank lines, converting tabs and straightening smart quotes. It always removes trailing spaces and non-breaking spaces, which are the invisible culprits behind text that wraps strangely or refuses to match in a search.

Questions
What is a non-breaking space and why is it a problem?
A space character that prevents a line break. Word processors and web pages insert them invisibly. They look identical to normal spaces but break search, sorting and code, so they are always removed here.
Why straighten smart quotes?
Curly quotes and em dashes look better in prose but break code, CSV files and some search boxes. Straighten them when the text is going somewhere technical.
Will it fix line breaks in the middle of sentences?
No. Hard breaks from PDF columns need judgement about which are real paragraph ends, so the tool leaves them rather than guessing wrong.
